The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

BPT’s Dark Skies – Rewilding the Night Campaign supports this years theme – Building Back Biodiversity and promotes local action in response to the Climate and Ecological Emergencies declared within Bath & North East Somerset.

Cumulatively increasing obtrusive light on Bath’s skyline, light spill and sky glow has potential to harm landscape character and wildlife across the city and the adjoining AONB.

Blue spectrum LEDs used in street lighting are a real problem for many species of insects, causing populations to crash. For example moths, which are essential for healthy ecosystems.

Increasing luminosity could have a significant disturbance to habitats, contrary to B&NES’ objectives for the Climate & Ecological Emergency.

We are calling for action on the way Bath’s streets are lit. BPT will challenge proposals for dusk until dawn illumination, street lighting that is unnecessary and too bright, or excessive in siting so that we have greater protection for areas of ecological sensitivity that need to be kept dark.

Well designed lighting must balance the needs for safety with minimised light spill. Simple solutions, such as late-night dimming or a reduction in the number of street lamps have worked in other areas and could easily be applied throughout Bath.

By supporting BPT you are supporting our call to action.
